Cheap prices with good nutrition, that can be found online at a discount.

Let’s begin with the prices we pay for the things we like; especially when it comes to food choices.

Sometimes we are strapped for cash, and that can affect our decision on what we are going to get.

Still, there are other factors to consider besides the money.

What about the nutrition that we are going to receive from the product we are about to consume?

If it does not have any real value to our bodies; we are just wasting our money, right?

Comparison between different brands

We can thank the FDA for updating the nutrition facts label back in May 2016, and this makes it easier to understand and more relevant to the healthy eating patterns of people today.

Most of the more prominent manufacturers have adopted the new format and are using it now.

On this label, we get all the pertinent information we need to make the right decision. It should go without saying; if you have concerns about the company itself, then it would be better to switch to another company.

New Nutritional Facts Label with explanations

In comparing between similar protein bars, the sugar content is critical to pay attention to. Especially if you have diabetes or trying to lose weight.

We don’t need any extra sugar getting slipped into our diet under the disguise of a protein bar; there are plenty out there that are no more than a glorified candy bar!

Read and compare the label; recently, my Diabetes Educator Nurse showed on how to interpret the information on the nutrition fact label, this was to get me to watch the number of carbs in my diet and reduce the carbohydrate intake to a minimum.

Low Carb Options

There are many low carb diets that we hear about every day.

Low Carb Diet Pyramid

Atkins, Ketogenic, South Beach, Paleo, Mediterranean, Ducan

All these diet plans use this basic pyramid of food choices. Food choices which are considered good foods to eat are located on the bottom and the foods choices to avoid on the top of the pyramid.

People with Diabetes can benefit from following this formula, any one of these diet plans can work if you stick to them and understand that you cannot have more calories coming in than your body is using or, you guessed it fatter.

We do not want that, so look carefully at your whole diet plan and see how much room you have before selecting any particular protein bars to get you from meal to meal.

How to use cheap protein bars with your diet

How do we go about shopping for the right protein bar for our particular needs?

Like anything else in this day and age most people start with a Google search and then start wondering off through all the information that comes from that, right?

That is why validating the information is so crucial to making a good choice that we will make us happy.

The price of the protein bars had gotten a lot cheaper than when they first came out.

The cost of producing them has come down, and it looks like the industry is responding to people demand and coming out with several flavors to choose.

This Larabar has no added sugar! So the fiber and protein content cancel out, and it makes a sweet 190 calorie snacks that do not affect my blood sugar.

Where do we get protein bars online

Most of my online purchases now come from Amazon. They are just the best, in my opinion, we have been using them now for over ten years and have not had an issue that was not taken care of quickly.

Even on my last purchase of a 225-pound massage chair, it came on time, and the delivery guys were very helpful in getting it in the house!

Recently we even ordered some; Lily’s Dark chocolate chips sweetened with stevia, from Amazon and was expecting to get some melted blob of chocolate that we could not use.

This concern is from the temperature in Houston, but to my surprise, they packaged it in some foil with cool packs which kept it cool.

At this time I have not ordered my protein bars online yet, still buying small amounts and trying them out before buying in bulk from Amazon which is what my intentions are to do soon.

It must be good tasting!

The food taste is essential because no matter how good something is for us we won’t eat it if it does not taste good!

At least I’m not… that is just being honest about it. But we can change our expectations and our taste buds to like things that are better for us.

People are still going to gravitate to the sweets that we all love and the carbs that make us feel good at Thanksgiving dinners.

In the meantime, as we go through a significant change in eating habits and facing the fact that we are not getting any younger, it is so important to keep the food choices palatable.

Please leave any comments and suggestion below on how to improve our diets and become healthier people.

I’d never even thought to get protein bars/ food from amazon! No idea why not I just hadn’t even thought about this.

It is so easy to buy food that has added sugar in. I believe it is the biggest factor in the health problem around the developed world currently. It’s more of an issue than anything else.

A lot has to be said fro eating a whole food diet more so than anything else.

    Thanks so much for sharing

    • Chad Trader says:

Thank for the reply Mike, Amazon is the best way to order online and they have some of the best prices too! Check out the Pure Protein Products available from Amazon.

I find this post a valuable read. As a health enthusiast, I am always mindful of the kinds of food I stuff into my mouth because I believe that one of the key elements of a healthy lifestyle is eating a healthy, balanced meal. Having healthy snacks is also something I am trying to maintain. This is why I make sure I know what’s in the food by checking out the label. But there seems to be a catch and that is — healthy snacks are often more expensive than unhealthy ones. In other words, to strive to eat healthy means you have to spend a few more dollars.

Most of the time, I prefer to go check out the items myself so I can read the “nutrition facts” label but if I can find cheap foods with good nutrition, that would be awesome. Larabar is actually one of the products I am considering because it has no added sugar. My only concern though is I am not sure it will suit my taste because I never tried it before. Shall I also try a couple first before purchasing in bulk?

    • Chad Trader says:

Thank you Alice for your comments and your good outlook on health issues. Good point and question is to find out if the products actually taste good to you.

There are some people out there who do not care about the taste too much; and they eat only for the nutritional value! I wish I could be in that group but for me it has to taste good for me to eat it!

The variety packs are what I do to try new brands, just this week I purchased some new ones to try mainly to write some reviews and give some comparison’s to help people make better choices and find some new bars myself.

  • Florence says:

Thank you for your points on how to choose Protein Bars, I found it very helpful because I am currently working on losing weight. I am constantly struggling with what snacks to take especially when travelling,I have often assumed that any Protein bar is healthy.I wanted to find out if i you can recommend any Protein bar for someone on a weight loss diet?

Can you also explain the food labels a little more on your next article? I ask because not many know how to translate them effectively and this can continue to damage health drastically.

    • Chad Trader says:

Thank you for your comments Florence and my favorite protein bars are the Pure Protein Bars.

They have the best nutrition and the best taste, even my daughter likes eating them just for the taste and because of my focus on my diet she is trying to think healthy too.

Good suggestion on how to read labels, because most of us have never really thought about it too much. Because of my diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, my awareness increased drastically and change the way I look at food in general and especially how to read the labels.

  • Jay says:

Improving our diets is really important and what we take in because we are dieting is really important. I recently read somewhere about some chocolates that can be taken for dieting. It was amazing because I actually had no idea that chocolate could be used for dieting.

From what I found out it is not all chocolate that has this functionality but some specific chocolate. That is one form of dieting that I know I can really appreciate.

    • Chad Trader says:

Thank you Jay for the response and your input on chocolate; chocolate, by itself, is not bad and there are many benefits to a person’s diet when consumed without the added sugars that comes from most candies.

The chocolate in the protein bars that do not contain high amounts of sugar, can be a good addition to a healthy diet plan.

There is a  lot of good option when it comes to buying food online. The problem is knowing what food is good for you and which food to avoid. I appreciate your article about finding good nutritional food online. I especially like the pyramid of foods diagram that shows you which type of foods to eat and avoid. Your article was very informative and I’m sure it’s going to help a lot of people dealing with diabetes. Looking forward to reading more of your post. Thanks.

    • Chad Trader says:

Thanks for your comment and encouragement Anthony good to hear the interest in the food pyramid, seem like many people relate well to this type of illustration.

  • Evald says:

    Hello there,

This article came just in time as recently, I was looking for some delicious snacks that would also be somewhat healthy and beneficial while not containing a lot of sugar. I am very glad that I’ve stumbled across Your article as it presented me with very good and effective solution- a sugar-free protein bar ”Larabar”. I will give it a shot and hopefully I will like the taste of it! What does it taste like, can You compare it to something ? ( I know it’s a hard questions when it comes to taste, but still maybe it is reminiscent of something to You). Thanks for the great article, I found it to be helpful and interesting. Keep up the great work

    • Chad Trader says:

Hello Evald, the Larabar has a taste that is kinda unique to itself; this is my opinion and it is a pleasant taste that is chewy and a little sticky on your teeth.

The consistency is the only thing that someone may find unappealing but there is no added sugar and they are pretty satisfying as a snack between meals.

Another product to try is the Pure Protein Bars there are really good!

  • Julie says:

Thanks for highlighting that these protein bars on offer have no hidden sugar. I like to be able to get some healthy snack on the run while saving pennies. When I’m out running errands I like to be able to have a reasonably priced snack choice by avoiding a fast food choice.

    • Chad Trader says:

Thank you for your comments Julie, it is good to have these available so that you can avoid the temptation to make the fast food choice which is going to leave you feeling bad in the long run.

  • Nuttanee says:

    Hi there!

Surprisingly, I do come across people that do not have any idea on what is carbs, fat and protein. This make me think that we really need to be more aware of what we put inside our bodies for optimal health. Thanks god that nowadays people are more aware of their health and there are many options available now. Even though you are a vegan or follow Keto, there are many healthy protein bars out there.

My favorite one is Cliff bars, they really take care of my hunger pangs, they take good, and they do not have that weird after taste that most protein bars do.

However, I read it online recently that SOY is a big no no. Soy is the cheapest source of protein, however it is processed too much and can mess up with your hormones level. You can find other alternatives like hemp bar is a good one as well.

Great post! Thank you for sharing, I will definitely shop more at Amazon! didn’t even know that most of them are from there lol.

    • Chad Trader says:

      Hello Nuttanee,

Thanks for your comment and I understand what you mean about the Cliff Bars.

My favorite protein bar is the Cliff Protein Builder bar which balances out to a net zero carbs and is bigger than the Pure Protein Bars which have the same amount of protein.

But when you are on the go they are in most of the convenient stores, they do get most of the protein from soy and I have read some negative articles on soy as well. Will need to do some more research on soy to see how it affects people.

      Have a great day!

  • Sukundi says:

Thanks for the great information. I really liked what you said about the Larabar – it has no added sugar. And protein bars are affordable now. I tried them ten years back because I wanted sweat tasting nutritious snacks for my children. What I found then were glorified over priced candy bars. Which was exactly what I didn’t want. After reading your article I am rethinking everything. They may be just the snack I need and I will try them again. Thank you for giving my perspective an update.

    • Chad Trader says:

Thank you for your response and comments, the Larabars are good to me and while they do not have added sugar I must watch how many of them to have being diabetic.

Your right just because the product says it is a protein bar, we must read the label and see how much sugar it has in relation to the protein and fiber content.

Check out the Pure Protein Products for the amount of protein and the taste. These are the best I have found so far.

Thank you for sharing such a wonderful post on  the food labels.I agree with you that most of the time the food we take at home can’t be complete when i refer to the pyramid you have shown in your post.

Our body needs what is necessary and we are the ones to offer that .However protein bars that i have tried were not to me regarding the taste and i do not know if those ones are different.

You are giving valuable posts and i like the information you provide.

    • Chad Trader says:

Glad that you find value in the information and learning how to look at the nutrition labels and interpret them properly has changed the way I look at food. Hope that it can help others as well!

  • AV 2001 says:

Chad, one thing I can tell you is that you’re definitely moving on the right track my friend. I’m a health conscious person who and I pick the right foods needed for my body and this blog contains all that. I have a question regarding this post. If you order foods that are rich in nutrition, will they deliver it to your home or how does this work? I’ve never tried this way before.

    • Chad Trader says:

Thanks for the interest and comments, I have been buying more and more things online these days especially with the changes to my diet and reading the labels in a different mindset.

The products that have good nutrition in them can have a shorter shelve life on them and that difinitely needs to be taking into consideration.

The items ordered from Amazon, Diet Direct, Avisae and others all get drop shipped directly to my home or mail box which is very convenient.

  • Chrissie Spurgeon says:

    Hi Chad

I love protein bars too, although I normally buy them from my local Health Food shop or make them myself. But I agree, they are not cheap! I prefer protein bars which use fruit rather than chocolate etc.

I was very interested in your food pyramid. I realise that you are talking mainly to diabetics, but for someone who is not diabetic but is trying to keep their weight down, should you really actually avoid the foods at the top of the pyramid? I have always thought that everyone should eat a certain amount of whole grains, is that not correct? And I had not heard that legumes were not good for you, as they provide fibre too.

You have really given me “food for thought” if you will excuse the pun!!

    Many thanks

    Chrissie 🙂

    • Chad Trader says:

Thank you for your comments Chrissie, yes we have been presented with many different ideas on what is a good diet to follow.

I thought I was doing good with my diet for the last five years only to find out that it was not enough. So many things come into the picture when considering what you should do.

Then we must be ready to make those changes, but you are right the things at the top of the food pyramid, refined grains and beans are things to keep to a minmum in any healthy diet and should not exceed 25% of your plate.

This is what is coming from the research that I have been learning.

  • johnny faulkenberry says:

Hi Chad, awesome, looking forward to your future posts about the food labels.

    • Chad Trader says:

      Thanks Johnny,

In my future post; I will be sure to include more information on the food labels, and how to use the data.

Every little bit helps us to make better choices.

      Have a great day!

  • johnny says:

A very interesting website. I am pre-diabetic myself. The pyramid of foods was very helpful on what to eat and what to avoid.

I agree, food that is good for me, needs to taste good. I don’t want it tasting like cardboard.

Is Amazon usually the best place to buy protein bars?

Can you get better prices by buying directly from the maker of the protein bars?

Will you being sharing the information from your nurse on how to interpret food labels? I think this would be very helpful for me.

    Thank you,

    • Chad Trader says:

      Hi Johnny,

Thanks for your comment,  Amazon is great in my experience, we get lots of stuff from there, right now I am not getting my protein bars from there because I am buying small amounts of different brands and flavors.

In my area Kroger has the best selection and allows you to buy one bar at a time if you want to try them out. The prices are better on Amazon, and I have not seen it any cheaper on any other website, even the manufacturers who affer direct sales.

I will be writing post detailing the information that is learned from both the Diabetes Educator Nurse and Doctors, also how what they recommend effects me.

Learning more about nutritional lables and how to apply it to normal life, is something that I will be sharing in my future post…

Please let me know if you have suggestion or more question.

      Have a great day!

  • Mariah says:

What are your favorite tasting protein bars that you have found? I have tried protein bars in the past and the truth is that I haven’t really like any of them unfortunately.

    • Chad Trader says:

      Hi Mariah,

My favortie bar; so far, is the Cliff Protein builder bar (chocolate peanut butter flavor), it taste the best from what I have tried and is filling too.
Got to be careful with the Ciff bars; many have alot of sugar in them, and for that reason I will not try them.

The Larabar taste pretty good, you have to get used to the texture, it seems to be a little guey.

The Pure Protein bars have several flavors and they taste like a candy bar, the size is samller and the calories are about 180 with a good balance between carbs/protein/sugar/fiber.

Also the RxBars taste pretty good; the texture is similar to the Larabar, but a little more firm and more filling.

They are not the same as a candy bar, but they are better for you.

      Hope this helps,
