Digestive Enzyme Chart

These enzymes get secreted into the food as part of the digestive process. Each one plays a role in maintaining the digestive system. Maintaining the proper balance is crucial to overall digestive health.

There is a common misconception that since the body makes the enzymes that it is not necessary to supplement digestive enzymes.

The statement is correct in that the body does make the enzymes; every action the body does requires resources to work. What if the ingredients are limited or are not there?

Another thing to think about in supplements is that when the enzymes are present in the food stream and the body does not need to make it; then the body can use its resources to do other things.

Types of Digestive Enzymes

There are several types of enzymes that the body uses to digest food correctly.

• Protease is the enzyme that breaks down the protein. As people get, there is a reduction in the enzymes produced making it more challenging to digest meats.

• Lactase is the enzyme to break down dairy products. Low levels of this enzyme can leave someone with unwanted symptoms like cramps, bloating, gas, etc.

Lipase is the enzyme that breaks down fat. Low levels of this enzyme can leave someone low in the water-soluble vitamins D, K, E, and A.

Heavy Fruit

• Cellulase is the enzyme that helps to break down the high fiber plant foods. People who lack this will experience excessive gas.

Amylase is the enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates. When this enzyme is deficient, it leads to the fermenting, which produces carbon dioxide and water, causing uncomfortable cramping and diarrhea.

• Bromelain is an enzyme that breaks down proteins and fats making it an excellent supplement to help with digestion.

Digestive enzymes are very important to the overall eating process. Right from the minute we chew and the salivary enzymes get mixed with the food to the points where it gets to the stomach and other enzymes such as pepsin mixes with the food. However, there are some acidic digestive enzymes that could cause ulcer when they don’t have any food substance to act on

Thanks for such a nice post. The golden memories of science class of my school life. But, I really did not know so deeply about the topic ‘Enzymes for digestions’.

After reading your article, I came to know about enzymes, activities of different types of enzymes, how we can get those and from where etc. We have been listening that, “Enzymes are good for digestions” but no one discussed so deeply. So, there come another ‘Thanks’.

Also, thanks for suggesting a product so that I do not need to be confused anymore to choose one. BTW, Is there any complete natural way of getting enzymes, without consuming products?

Thank you for your comment and the appreciation of the information in the article. The ways to get the enzymes that we need is through a healthy diet, and all the nutrients that are required to produce the digestive enzymes in the body will be there. But like with vitamins and minerals if we are lacking then the supplement makes up the difference.

Oh my, how true is this, Chad.

Being unable to digest your food properly is a nightmare for some people, to the extent that they become almost scared of eating, because they know that the pain and discomfort are going to plague them for hours after every meal.

And, of course, it’s not just the discomfort, but the very serious effect that, with your digestive system not working properly, nutrients are not being delivered the way they should be.

Your list of digestive enzymes was an eye-opener. I had no idea that there were so many and that each was released in a certain order with their own specific role to play.

I had the exact problem you mention, a couple of years ago I had zero energy. Literally, I would go out for about 5 minutes and come back and collapse on the couch. Someone recommended to me that I should get my vitamin B12, D and iron levels checked.

My B12 was terribly low. I started taking supplements, and thankfully, I am a different person now! I always thought it was because I wasn’t eating enough food which has B12 in but perhaps my body was just struggling to digest it properly. Thanks for recommending digestive enzymes- I will definitely be getting some now!

    • Chad Trader says:

Thanks for your comments and sharing your experiences. The digestive system delivers the vitamins and minerals to the rest of the body and must be working correctly to do it efficiently. Glad that you are using your Doctor to test for low vitamin levels that is the best way to verify.
